Trustee Opportunities

We have exciting opportunities to join the team of Trustees. Our mission is to conserve and share Dartmoor’s rich heritage and we have recently developed an ambitious vision to become the primary gateway to exploring Dartmoor’s, its history and people.   

We are seeking trustees who have vision and enthusiasm, combined with a love of Dartmoor to help with our sustainable growth and transformation to a dynamic museum that is relevant to all people.   If you have experience in marcomms, finance or fundraising/bid writing and can spare 1-3 hours a week then we’d love to hear from you. 

Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for oversight of the day to day management of the Charity’s finances, reporting to the Board of Trustees.

Role Description
  • Preparation of Annual Report and Accounts for independent examination and arranging for independent examination to take place
  • Updating the financial strategy annually.
  • Provide regular financial reports to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that trustees are able to make informed decisions about the Museum’s future direction
  • Ensure that all financial transactions are conducted in line with legal and ethical standards
  • Advise the Board of Trustees on financial matters, providing guidance and expertise to help ensure that the museum is able to achieve its mission and objectives
  • Participating in the Income Generation Working Group in the preparation of applications for external grants and the generation of other income
  • Working with the Chair of Trustees in management of leases for courtyard tenants

The Treasurer is an officer of the CIO and is part the Trustees Management Group responsible for the administration and staffing of the Museum. The Treasurer role is instrumental in ensuring the financial sustainability of the Museum.

Skills and Experience required

  • Experience of financial management, fundraising and investment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with trustees, staff, and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of the regulatory environment in which the charity operates

Income Generation Trustee

The Trustee for income generation will be responsible for generating income required to deliver the Strategic Plan and ensuring the ongoing financial sustainability of the Museum. 

Role Description
  • Identifying opportunities for diversification of income
  • Increasing shop sales
  • Donations and legacies
  • Online shop
  • Developing sales packages with other local tourist attractions
  • Leveraging opportunities from the Tourist Information Centre located inside the museum

The trustee will be responsible for chairing the income generation working group responsible for developing the income generation strategy, setting and managing the income generation budget and reporting of progress at Trustee meetings. This role will be instrumental in enabling the museum to deliver its strategic development goals and hence its growth from a rural museum in Okehampton to one which is the primary gateway to exploring the whole of Dartmoor, its history and people.

Skills and Experience required

  • Experience in income generation such as bid writing or fundraising
  • Experience in developing and implementing fundraising strategies
  • Experience in business development/sales (desirable)

Marketing Communications Trustee

The Trustee responsible for Marketing will take the lead on promoting engagement with visitors and other stakeholders – locally, nationally, and internationally – building and nurturing diverse and inclusive relationships and raising awareness of the museum and its work.

Role Description

This role supports our Engagement strategic objective to:

  • Actively seek interactions with the local community and schools
  • Engage a wide range of people across the Dartmoor landscape
  • Build new audiences through a targeted programme of activities.
  • Develop a visitor experience that engages a wider range of people
  • Engage a diverse audience in inclusive ways

At a strategic level, the Marketing Trustee will work closely with the Digital Interpretation Trustee, the Digital Marketing Trustee, and the Museum Manager, to develop a Marketing Strategy for the Museum that will achieve the Strategic plan. This group will also be responsible for the development of the Digital Engagement Plan and the Audience Development Plan.

At an operational level, the Marketing trustee will work with the Museum Manager to create Marketing campaigns that will support the museum’s exhibitions, outreach activities etc.

This will include advising on articles; press releases; brochures and leaflets; attendance at shows etc. This role will be instrumental in enabling wider engagement with visitors – locally, nationally, and internationally, and in reaching a more diverse and inclusive audience.
